Playdough Self-Portrait Activity for Toddlers
What’s inside this article: Instructions for a simple, but fun, self-portrait activity for toddlers, using playdoh to create (and a free printable).

Playdough was something I used to hate, as a mom, but my kids always loved it. I’ve let go of my dislike for playdough for three reasons – it’s cheap, it’s easy to sweep up once it has dried up, and it keeps the kids funny.
There are also several benefits to playing with playdough for toddlers.
- Develops fine motor skills
- It’s calming to play with
- It encourages creativity and imagination
- Promotes independent play time
- Aids sensory development and integration
Playdough Self-Portrait
With this simple playdough activity, kids create their own self portrait using playdough and one of these blank heads pictured.
You can download these for free by clicking the download icon. Then just choose the one that best matches your child’s skin tone, and print.

Set up the Activity
All you need is the blank head and some playdough, but you may also want to use different craft items like googly eyes, pipe cleaners, glitter, beads, etc. It also helps to have a little mirror for your toddler to look at themselves.
Plus, it might be helpful to have some tools like playdough cutters, rolling pin, etc. available.
Questions to Ask
You can ask your child questions to help them notice their different physical traits as they build their self-portrait. This also helps with language development and social skills.
- What color is your hair?
- What color are your eyes?
- How long is your hair?
- What does your nose look like?
- What about your eyebrows?
- What are you wearing – glasses? earrings? hat?
